La Habra Corn Festival
The Corn Festival is the signature event for the La Habra Host Lions Club. It has been a success for decades and continues to be the highlight of the social calendar in La Habra. Located at El Centro /Lions Park, the festival covers an entire weekend and includes numerous rides and attractions, independent food, game and craft booths, a market place, live music, a car opportunity draw contest and Miss La Habra, the club queen and her court!
The La Habra Host Lions Club was organized in 1947. One of its members, Bill Miller was instrumental in helping the new club form a major annual fundraiser. Bill knew that Southern California had many transplanted mid-westerners and suggested that the Club start an old fashioned corn festival. Initially it was a one day community gathering event that included square dancing, bingo and all the buttered ears of corn that one could eat.
The net proceeds from The Corn Festival is donated to support various La Habra based non profits agencies as well as regional, National and Global Lions International focus charities and causes. A partial list includes Lions Clubs international Foundation, Lions Eye Foundation, Southern California Lions Eye Institute, City of Hope, Teen Recognition, the La Habra Boys and Girls Club, Help for Brain Injured Children, The Gary Center, and Advance! “With individual and corporate giving at a historic low, funds provided by Lions are vital dollars to help sustain important social service programs” explains Lion Liz Steves, Publicity Chair and 12 year lion member. Lions support La Habra Senior Citizen programs by raising thousands of dollars annually at their Pasta Fest. Lions put forth their favorite quote “We Serve” by volunteering on the annual city Veterans Day event as committee members to plan and execute an amazing breakfast for the Veterans’ which includes a crowd pleasing SOS staple menu. The lions have raised thousands of dollars, plus toys and gift cards over three Decembers through an annual car show to support La Habra Operation Santa which serves hundreds of families during the holidays. It is estimated that over $2.5 million has been raised and distributed to a variety of worthy organizations, projects and causes as a result of club fundraisers since the club was formed.
